Identification Methods
Three dorsal fins and two anal fins, the first anal fin being 2-3 times the length of the second anal fin. A member of the cod family it rarely grows to over 3lbs although fish have been caught over 4lbs off Irish shores. It has the distinctive line running from the tailfin to just above the gill slit. Can be caught on sand eels, crab or small crustaceans. Whiting can be hard to detect when biting so vigilance and concentration is essential.
